The Last Word

mythtellerIt's been quite a day already. I've already been accused of being a racist and an anti-Semite, and it's not even 11am!
I read yesterday that there is a group of people who are looking to have Lionel Groulx metro station renamed to Oscar Peterson. Although I think that honoring Mr. Peterson is fine idea, but naming a metro station has nothing to do with his memory or his musical genius (unless you allow buskers to put baby grand pianos on the platform).
There is a music hall on Loyola campus (Concordia) that is named after him, and they didn't even wait until he was dead!
I think that dedicating an evening in the Jazz festival to his memory to would serve him better. Or maybe creating a fund that allows young impoverished students to pursue a career in music would lend his name to a worth cause.
I was listening to CJAD this morning and I called in to voice this opinion. Although Tommy Schnermacher disagreed with me somewhat, I was satisfied to be the last word on the subject (the focus of the talk show shifted to another issue). I also posted this opinion on a Facebook group about this issue, to which I was then accused of being an anti-Semite because, by saying that maybe renaming a metro station wasn't the best way to honor this musician, this obviously meant that I was "a fan of the racist history revisionist".
