This is how we hold'em in Dublin Texas
Feb. 6th, 2007 12:00 pmLast night, Ms. Carotte and my buddy The Admiral went down to the Olde Dublin pub for an evening of Texas Hold'em poker. It was free to play and we played for points rather than money. This is a tournament thing with prizes each night and in 3 months, there's a grand tournament with 200 of the best players competing for prizes.
It took a few hands to get into the swing of it. I'm used to Dealer's Choice with a betting limit of 0.50$ and a buy-in of 5$. With a system like that, you can end up playing poker for hours, and since it's just a friendly game with friends, it's just what we want.
This evening was completely different. I was surrounded by mostly unfamiliar faces (I knew a couple of people, but they weren't close friends), there was no trash talk, and the only game we played was Texas Hold'em with no limits. The chips were worth 25$, 50$, 100$, and 500$ with a total startup amount of 4000$.
When you keep playing the same type of poker game, it makes it alot easier to calculate the odds of a good hand. In Dealer's Choice, the games are so wildly different (and some are just plain ridiculous), consistent strategy is almost impossible. When I went to see the latest Bond flick Casino Royale, I was shocked to see that people were winning with 2 pair or a flush. In Dealer's choice, those are risky hands to bet the farm on. In Hold'em, with an Ace-high flush you can go all in with confidence.
I managed to stay in the game for about 1.5 hours, which isn't bad for my first no limits Hold'em. I played pretty well, but I need to change my strategy a bit to being conservative in the early hands with many players to being more aggressive with fewer players at the end of the game. I'm definitely going back.
If anyone is interested in joining us for an evening of No Limit Hold'em, this game is being held every Monday night at 7pm (sign-up between 6pm and 7pm) at the Old Dublin pub on University/Cathcart (2nd floor). Have a pint and play some cards. It's not a bad way to spend an evening and it doesn't break the bank.
