This past weekend was the last LARP of the season Domaine. I can't complain about the weather really 'cause it didn't rain until late Saturday night and it stopped by the time I got up on Sunday.

It was friggin' cold though. Even with the kick-ass cape [livejournal.com profile] sarahcarotte made me, the chill got into my bones on Friday night. The next night, I had my wooly sweater and socks, so it kept me toasty.

Because it was the last game, I decided to up the volume on my monk character (Rufino). Whenever an evil creature would turn up, I made sure it knew that Mithera (the healing goddess my character followed) did not welcome it here. I was also very vocal about my feelings on the presence of "friendly" orcs and ogres in the village (that their evil natures would only bring harm to the innocent).

Essentially, my interpretation was that the only good races were humans, elves, and dwarves. Every other race was born outside of the circle of Mithera and therefore, evil. It was our job, as followers of Mithera, to defend the weak against the forces of evil, even if that meant enforcing it using the sharp end of a sword. After all, this being was unfortunately born outside of the natural circle of Mithera and we were facilitating it to be reborn within her circle.

If any of the "good" races strayed into Evil, it was our duty to bring them back to the light. But if they refused to change their evil ways, then they would be dispatched back into the circle of Mithera.

Admittedly, this was a very harsh interpretation of the philosophy of Mithera (according to the LARP rules), but it lead to some great roleplay, conflict, and philosophical discussions at the Inn. And if I may toot my own horn, I did pretty well in those discussions considering that I was making most of it up on the spot.

All in all, I enjoyed playing this intolerant, obnoxious, and self-righteous bigot.

There are two more LARPs coming up though. At the end of October, we'll be visiting two old LARP friends in their game as a band of gypsies (I'll be ressurecting my old Valentino character). And then in December, a bunch of us will be invading a Toronto LARP as another band of gypsies, but the kind that don't speak English!

I envision much hilarity as the Ontarian LARPers try to teach us gypsies to speak proper English ("Dis iz an hAPPLE?").

Despite the rain and the new terrain, our first Domaine du Createur game was a rousing success. I played my new Monk character named Ruffino: a kilt-clad, Italian-speaking, devotee of the all-powerful healing goddess known as Mithera. As soon as I get everything unpacked again, I'll take and post a picture of my new costume.

Gamewise, I found myself struggling with this new character. As a follower of Mithera, I'm supposed to value all life except for abberations of nature like demons, undead, or unnatural creatures). This forced me to evaluate each creature I came across and try to decide if I could attack it or if I was supposed to tolerate it's existence. Of course, if it attacked me, the gloves came off.

Instead, I found I had to hold myself back alot and act serene like a Monk is supposed to act. I spent part of the quiet time in the game meditating, which made for good roleplay and it got noticed. I also had fun making up prayers to Mithera when people came to me for healing. I need to expand on that more in the next game (maybe lead a meditation so that folks can get more spell energy (an extra spell stick).

But all in all, it was a great weekend. It'll be even better next time if it doesn't rain.

But after two days of being in costume, I've become quite attached to the wearing of the kilt. It's fabulously liberating and comfortable (not to mention damned sexy). I've decided that I must get a kilt of my own. I wonder how formal an event needs to be for me to wear the kilt appropriately?

In visiting the Village of Values yesterday, I managed to find a kilt and a sporren for my costume. Now I just need to pick up a water jug and some basins for dishwashing and we'll be set for LARPing this weekend. Now if only the weather would behave.

I don't mind if it rains during my LARP as long as it's not a downpour. A light rain keeps the bugs away, and considering that I'll be kiltified this weekend, that would be a good thing.

Wearing a kilt in this game will be good practice for the kilt I eventually intend to wear. No, I'm not Scottish, but there are plenty of Irish kilts as well. However, for the Irish, the tartans are determined by the county you are from. In my case, I would wear a Tipperary Tartan.

Last night, I barely slept a wink for some reason. I kept dreaming that there was some kind of danger in the bedroom, so I kept waking up and investigating it. But it was only when [livejournal.com profile] sarahcarotte jerked suddenly that I realized that she was having a low blood-sugar reaction. My dreams seemed to be in tune with this and kept trying to wake me up to deal with it.

As I've been suspecting for some time now, I think I've developped a psychic bond to her blood-sugar levels; I keep waking up just in time to deal with it. However, I feel no confidence in this. It's scary every time and I always fear that I might, one day, sleep through an episode.

Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] kittyfin! Toasty Yorkshire pudding for everyone!

[livejournal.com profile] sarahcarotte's sewing machine is all adjusted! It was a settings thing... dang blasted new fangled sewing machine things!

I became a paying member of the Quebec Writer's Federation yesterday. I'm hoping they can help me navigate the murky waters of applying for Canada Council grants for my various projects. I'm also hoping to reach a greater audience for storytelling and storytelling-related workshops. All creative writers are storytellers, no?

This weekend will be our first LARP and I still have no pants. I may go the plaid route with some pajama bottoms, but the 30% of rain predicted for the weekend just jumped to 80%. Maybe I'll go to the Sally Ann today and see what I can find.

Question: does anyone know of a place in Montreal where they would sell a Utilikilt (www.utilikilt.com)? I have decided that my LARP character (a monk name Ruffino) would definitely wear a kilt and I'm looking for a time-efficient way of getting one.

In searching for this information, I found this fake ad for utilikilt.com (Utilikilt: They Work). Amusing.

Thanks to everyone for voting on the recommended TMBG album. I will be visiting my local record shop to purchase the Flood album.

Of course, when I visit the record shop, I can never leave with just one album. These other albums are also on my list:

Moxy Fruvous: Bargainville
Waterboys: Fisherman's Blues extended
Waterboys: Karma to Burn
Greg Brown: Live at the Black Sheep
Greg Brown: The Live One
Bruce Springsteen: We Shall Overcome (The Seger Sessions)
Fun with Bing & Louis (1949-1951)
Billy Idol: VH1 Storytellers

Last weekend was chock-full of goodies. I had to give a bardic workshop at CMS on Saturday morning and then, in the afternoon, [livejournal.com profile] sarahcarotte, [livejournal.com profile] grrscary, and Sam the Elf went exploring the Medieval Fair.

So much neat stuff in that place! There were beautiful weapons (both steel and boffo), armor (leather and steel), jewelry, clothing, and stuff, stuff, stuff! [livejournal.com profile] sarahcarotte tried on chainmail armor while I looked over-protected in various helmets.

In the end, all of us walked away with something. [livejournal.com profile] sarahcarotte told me that I could either get my birthday present from the fair or from the computer store. I picked the fair 'cause the computer store will always be there. So she picked out a kick-ass medieval shirt and jacket that I can wear in a number of places (LARPing, Pagan fests, special events, etc.). I love that girl.

For myself, I picked out a drinking horn with leather trim. Sam the Elf got a little bag and [livejournal.com profile] grrscary picked up a box of leather scraps (anything else?). All very cool stuff.

The next day, I went to the first edition of the Pagan Sunday Brunch at Chez Dusty's (Parc/Mont-Royal). The Brunch was very well attended (30 people!) and a bunch of us went to the TamTams afterwards (where I got to test out my new Djembe!).

We ended the day with some Irish storytelling at Hurley's Pub. Exhausting, but very satisfying weekend!

After much boffo nagging from several of my larping friends, I finally cast my votes for the various categories including Best Role-Play, Funniest Character, Most Sympathetic Character, etc.

I was sad to see that I had not been nominated in any of the categories, but my character concept (while brilliant) was more than I could handle and carry off with any kind of noticable effect.

However, I did feel I should've been nominated for Best Spellcaster, especially considering the last few spells I cast before the game ended (there were two contenders for the throne and, just before they launched into heartfelt speeches to defend their positions, I cast a spell on both of them that caused them to swear for an hour).

So I nominated myself in that category. If anyone of you feel that I should be nominated in that category, you should feel free to nominate me after-the-fact.

Go. Only you have the power to change the vote.

Karnack the Magnificent met his untimely end this weekend. Driving home, I realized that Karnack was born a loser, lived his life a loser, and ultimately died a loser as well. An all-around tragic hero if there ever was.

I felt like I was Charlie Brown with poofy pants.

I spent most of the weekend getting myself killed, mainly because I kept saying the one thing I shouldn't have (just like real life). Sometimes it was fun, sometimes the timing sucked.

On Saturday evening, I found out that the opportunity to complete my one mission that brought me to that cursed island came and went and I wasn't there. I was so angry and frustrated, I threw a hissy-fit in the village. I was then so depressed, I almost crawled into my bunk and refused to leave.

But then I decided that maybe I'd get another chance to go down in glorious flames. The opportunity didn't present itself again, but I had plenty of other moments. Favourite moments include:

1. Bitching out the priest of Strage (the evil god) and having my tongue ripped out for my insolence before I was sucked dry by a vampire.

2. I was beaten to a pulp for insulting a barbarian by spitting on his honor and his armor. He called me a liar! What else could I do?

3. I cast a blaspheming spell on a General while he was pep-talking his supporters. He was forced to swear like a sailor for an hour. A couple of his supporters actually walked away ("He can't speak to me like that!")!

4. I was getting ready to cast a stammering spell on another priest who was getting ready to raise a vampire from the dead (it wouldn't have kept him from performing the ceremony, but it would've been so funny), but I said the wrong thing to the barbarian and he killed me for it. Drat.

And in the end, because I had been knocked around a few times, I tried teleporting off the island into the astral plane, but I died in transit.

And so ends the legacy of Karnack the Magnificent.

I was assured by my weather witches that it would not rain this weekend! If you can't count on your weather witches, who can you count on?

This is the final weekend for our LARP with Domaine du Createur. Final for the season, final for all time. After nine years of putting this extravaganza together, they've decided to put it to rest. It's a huge job coordinating this thing. Rather than be too disappointed, I can only tip my hat and give thanks for all the fish.

But the terrain will be mooshy and spirits will be soggy if this doesn't let up soon. The tarps had better *hold*.

Last weekend, I was at my LARP (Live Action Role Play) game called Domaine du Createur (the longest running LARP in Montreal (9 years!)). sarahcarotte and I both play characters in this game: I'm a wizard named Karnack the Magnificent and sarahcarotte plays a healer named Kindara.

I just want to share a memorable moment with all of you: Sunday morning at 10:30 am sarahcarotte had just woken up and chatting quietly about what had happened in the LARP the night before. We heard a thumping sound from nearby that sounded distinctly like a large boffo weapon smacking the ground. We had just enough time to wonder who was making that sound when we heard a growling right outside our own tent. I yelped when that same boffo weapon hit the platform our tent was sitting on.

"You have 10 seconds to get out of there and fight or you're dead," growled the animator.

"But I'm not dressed!" I cried.

"I don't care," replied the animator. "10, 9, 8, ..."

So sarahcarotte and I scrambled to get up and grab our weapons. We got out of the tent and began to fight the monster-animator. Unfortunately, sarahcarotte got trapped in the camp and was almost killed, but I managed to get the monster to come after me onto the road. As we fought, a staff weapon flew over the camp wall and landed next to the monster, picked picked it up and continued to fight.

"Thanks alot," I cried out. "Now the monster has TWO weapons!"

I managed to fend the monster off by myself (armed with a staff that does 1 point of damage as opposed to the monster's hammer that does 5 points of damage) for about 200 yards until I was able to get grrscary out of her tent to help me.

When the monster was finally dead, I had a chance to take a moment to notice that I was only dressed in a shirt, red boxer shorts, and purple dress socks. I bent down to search the body of the monster for any objects of value, which means I said to the animator:

"I search your corpse. Do I find anything?"

"Nope," replied the animator, who then grinned. "I can't believe you fought me in your boxer shorts!"

"Dude, just be glad that you didn't get a glimpse at why I'm called Karnack the Magnificent!"

Heh.
