37 years old today. I think I'm going to start referring to it as 30 years with 7 years of experience.

So far, I've gotten a few ecards, some yummy tea (thanks [livejournal.com profile] sarahcarotte, and a few phone calls.

I know two other people who celebrate this day. There's [livejournal.com profile] kideternity and my long-time friend Patsy. Tonight, I'll be joining Patsy at the ComedyWorks for some yukyuks. On the weekend, Ms. Carotte has something planned, but I have no idea what.

May the 4th be with you!

This past weekend, I was in Ontari-ari-ario (somewhere south of Ottawa) at a Pagan Men's Retreat. Although it was damp and cold, we somehow managed to have a spiritually deepening experience, not to mention how to maximize our tarping techniques.

On Saturday night, I led a spear-dedication ritual. Each guy spent the day finding, carving, and whittling a staff of their choosing and Brad (our land host) gave us metal spear heads that he designed (he's a blacksmith). The guys also built a portal of 2x4s which was actually meant for something else, but it served our purposes.

That night, to the pitter-patter of rain on the tarp overhead, we gathered around the fire-pit, called out to the Gods, and walked from this reality into the next reality (via the portal). Each man had a chance to issue a boast, announce their binding promise, and use the portal to leave the reality that they were in and walk into the reality that would allow them to fulfill that binding promise (a form of Quantum Magic).

In this new reality, each man received a leather strap and bound their promises to their spears. Then they thanked their gods for witnessing the event and we ended the circle.

We also spoke about what it was like being men in the modern world (the Age of the Wuss). This discussion continued around the campfire long after the ritual was done.

It was a great weekend. It would've been even better had it not rained, but we made the best of it (contrary to popular belief, witches do not melt in the rain). I look forward to seeing these guys during the summer in the other pagan-fests.

Although I'm going to be more careful with what and how much I drink. Red wine/porto hangovers are the worst.

Another successful St. Patrick's Day celebration has come and gone. The Brunch was well-attended (including [livejournal.com profile] sarahcarotte, [livejournal.com profile] yukonflower, [livejournal.com profile] talyesin, [livejournal.com profile] grrscary, [livejournal.com profile] un_roseau, and [livejournal.com profile] twilightbunny,) and the food was fantastic (thanks to Edith for the Scotch Eggs)! Not much of the food was terribly Irish, but we live in a multi-cultural city, so we had plenty of cultures at the table: bagels, scones, haggis, eggs, potatoes, fruit salad (although it was more like fruit soup), bacon, etc...

The party broke up around 11:30 am as we made our way to the Parade that started at noon. Ms. Carotte still can't walk, so we rented a wheelchair for the day. The unexpected affect was that many of the Parade walkers made a point of coming to Ms. Carotte and giving her special attention. It was great.

After standing and watching for a while, near the end of the parade, we decided to take advantage of a hole in the parade route and start walking in it ourselves (right behind the James Lyng High School float. We waved, danced, shook hands with folks, got the crowd to cheer a few times, and enjoyed the walk.

Once we hit University road, we stepped out of the Parade and made our way down to the Old Dublin pub. Surprisingly, the staff was very accomodating of the wheelchair and found us a spot to sit.

We spent most of the day at the Dublin before heading over to Ben's for some smoked meat. We then headed down to Hurley's to end off the night.

[livejournal.com profile] sarahcarotte and [livejournal.com profile] yukonflower headed home around 11pm, but Kensington stayed with me until about midnight. I stayed out until about 4am, coming home in a drunken stupor. I suffered a bit the next day, but this is the price I must pay for a little over-exuberance on my part.

All in all, it was a great weekend. Thanks to everyone who made it memorable. Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] yukonflower for visiting and we hope we've planted a seed to get you to move to Montreal eventually.

It's that time of year again, steeped in tradition.

I have four traditions for this time of year:

1. Join my Angus and Kensington for a pint on the 17th of March.
2. Attend a St. Patrick's Day brunch.
3. Watch the St. Patrick's Day parade on the Sunday.
4. Go pub crawling.

This year, there are two pubs I definitely want to hit: the John Sleeman pub and the new Olde Orchard pub in town. This evening, I intend to consume without fear and go on a socializing rampage. Tomorrow will never come!

This is a mild form of what I used to do in my younger days. In the days of yore, I would start celebrating on the Thursday night and go non-stop until the wee hours of Monday morning.

I don't have that kind of stamina anymore, but I'm more than willing to hoist a pint to those days. If I cross you in the next few days, let's raise a pint together and sing of the old times.

Everyone is in such a pissy mood today (myself included). I hope we get a beautiful day next Sunday for the St. Patrick's Day Parade. We need to have our spirits lifted.

The weather in Ottawa (I sound like my mum) was beautiful, but I was caught in the intense fog bank that stretched from Ottawa to Montreal last night. I literally could only see 100 feet ahead of the car (highway signs would just suddenly appear out of nothing on the side of the road). Despite the white-out conditions, some drivers were roaring past me (doing 120km+) like there was nothing wrong.

Luckily, there were no moose or deer out for a highway gallavant while I was digging my nails into the steering wheel.
