This past weekend, I was playing the last game of my LARP for the season. Alas, my latest character, Rufino the Mitheran Monk, breathed his last breath. His final act was to create a temple to his matron Goddess of healing. The next day, he was killed while trying to defend the weak from shadow aberrations.
I'm gonna miss playing that character. It was great fun to play a zealot, which really play against the typical Mitheran mind-set. It made for fantastic roleplay. I don't know what my next character will be. I've never played a follower of Sator (the intolerant good God), but I find playing Good characters frustrating. Anyways... I have until next May to work this new character out.
When I got home, I found that the cats had left me fecal gifts, so the house smelled less than pleasant. After picking up the offerings, I went to my altar and lit the spirit candle. I used that candle to light several sticks of incense to move the offending smells out.
The mistake I made was that I forgot to extinguish the spirit candle. It burned unattended for about 10 hours, during which I had left the house to attend a Thanksgiving dinner, then came home and went to bed.
After 3am, I was in a deep sleep when I was awoken by a *tink* sound. I distinctly heard the sound, but I awoke confused. The cats are always roaming the house, so I've gotten used to odd sounds from other rooms, but for some reason, I sensed danger. In my half-awake state, I thought someone else was in the house, so I got up to investigate.
When I walk into the den, I immediately spotted the problem. The spirit candle was completely melted away, but the wick was still standing up and the flames were starting to consume the wooden shelf. The glass plate that held the candle had shattered, causing the *tink* sound.
Completely awake now, I extinguished the candle and made sure the shelf was not on fire. If it had been left alone for another hour, the shelf and wall would definitely been ablaze.
I lay awake for about an hour after that, the adrenaline seeping out of my body. Why did I react the way I did when I heard the glass plate shatter? How did I know there was danger? I could've just as easily rolled over and gone back to sleep, but I didn't. Somehow, I knew something was wrong.
Thanksgiving is a time when friends and family share a meal and enjoy each other's company, giving thanks for all the blessings that they bestow on each other. This would have been the first Thanksgiving without my Dad, but I'd like to think that he was with me last night, warning me of danger.
Thanks Dad. Happy Thanksgiving.
