The Joys of Robo Kitty Litter
Jul. 25th, 2008 07:46 amI have two cats in my home and dealing with the kitty litter (and what happens when the cats DON'T use the litterbox) has been a major thorn in my side for the last nine years.
I had heard about the automatic kitty litterboxes, but I wasn't sure they were all they were cracked up to be. I also heard that they were noisy, tended to jam up easily, and that cats could get freaked out by them. But after speaking with
risingphoenix about her experiences with her robo-litterbox, I decided to give it a try.
risingphoenix came with me to Canadian Tire (the one on St. Jacques in NDG) and we found a robo-litterbox called the Simply Clean Litter Box System. Unlike
risingphoenix's litter box, this one was silent and didn't need special bags. The way it works is the litter goes in a bowl and the bowl rotates *very* slowly, taking a full hour for a complete rotation. This moves the poop onto a conveyor ramp that carries the poop out of the bowl and into a drawer, where you put your plastic bag. The bowl moves so slowly that the cats don't get freaked out by its movement.

My two cats took to it right away. In the above picture, I removed the cover that is normally over the conveyor belt. This means that the litter is always clean enough for the cats to use it, I only need to change the litter every 4 to 6 weeks, and I change the poop bag once a week. You need to use quality clumping litter or the process doesn't work that well. There's very little smell; if it smells strongly, it probably means that the cats have just done their business or that you need to change the bag.
This robo-litterbox is a godsend to our home. The amount of cat smell in the house is drastically reduced (if not eliminated), there are no "gifts" left on the floor, the litter lasts longer (therefore, we use less of it), and the amount of fuss in dealing with the litter is way more manageable.
The Simply Clean system cost about $130 (plus tax), but it has more than paid for itself in terms of peace of mind, both for the humans as well as the cats. I highly recommend it to everyone!
