Online vs Real Life
Aug. 10th, 2008 08:22 pmIn this electronic, Internet age, we are all forming friendships and relationships in a variety of ways. There are the people we interact with in person and there are those we interact with online. Sometimes these relationships overlap from the electronic to the real; sometimes that is good, sometimes it's not so good.
But the Internet is good in allowing people to connect across vast physical distances. Through email, LJ, Facebook, online chat, people can continue to connect and interact despite the distances.
That's all well and good, but I've found over the years that the in-person experience FAR OUTWEIGHS the online exchange. My friendships are based on how we interact in person, not online. Similarly, if I judge that a person acts like an ass online (usually on an elist), I will reserve my full judgment on their character based on how they treat me in real life.
So while the Internet is a great way to keep in touch, my true investment in friends is only made in-person. Does anyone else think this way?
