Dinger's Latest Medical Adventure
Jan. 15th, 2009 08:30 amSo here's what's happening with our cat Shroedinger (or Dinger for short).
A few months ago, Dinger somehow picked up an infection which starting producing lots of pus and blood that leaked out of his ear. We tried cleaning it out ourselves, but it kept coming back. We went to our local vet and they tried to clean it out a couple of times. Dinger went on medication and ear drops, but the infection persisted.
The problem is that the infection is in the lower part of the cat's ear canal. Because its is L-shaped, it's almost impossible to clearly see what's going on in the lower level. Also, an infection will not only fill the canal upwards, but it can also extend downwards and piece the eardrum.
Therefore, the cat needs to have an opening made below his ear so that we can access the lower areas of his ear canal.
So Dinger has had an incision made in his skull which extends the opening in his ear downwards to line up with the lower part of the ear canal. I spoke with the vet yesterday and she said that the operation was a success and she removed a pollop from the ear canal which measured 3 centimeters in length.
Hopefully, this will fix the problem but there's a 50% chance that the infection will recur. However, because of the permanence of the incision, it'll be easier to access the canal and clean it out.
We should be getting Dinger back today or Friday.
