So I went for my first session of Cosom Hockey (ball hockey) at the YMCA. Who knew that this activity would be so hard on the system? After only 15 minutes, my legs were burning and my gut was hurting. After 30 minutes (with breaks), I was sweating clean through my sweatshirt. After 60 minutes, I had to call it a night. I had a headache, felt faint, and the panting was heavy (calm down ladies).

But it was fun! What I liked about it was that the guys weren't hyper competitive, which turns me right off. I just wanna play; I don't care about winning/losing. I managed to make a few good passes (resulting in a goal) and I got a few solid shots on goal (but no result). Not bad for a guy who hasn't played in 20 years.

So I'll be playing this game on Tuesday nights for the next 10 weeks. Now I just need to get to the gym two more times a week and that'll be my 3 times a week. What's brought this on? I saw pictures of myself during my Cuba trip: something's gotta give somewhere.

ex-trainer kicking in here (my apologies):

Make sure that you can still talk reasonably comfortably when you exercise. If you are panting so hard you can't hold a conversation then you've over-stressed your system. Also feeling faint during or after a worrk is definitely not good. It can also be dangerous.

Pay atttention to headaches that you get after working out. They can be hypoglycaemic of hypertensive headaches.

If you're not used to exercising, and/or if you have asthma or hypertension, take adequate time to cool down, at least 10 minutes. Cooling down is not just stopping it is slowing down to a stop. For something like ball hocket, take some time to do dynamic stretching exercise, ie, exercises that stretch the muscles but where you continue to move as opposed to sitting/lying on the floor.

First, good for you!

Second, in addition to what silly_imp advises, I just want to add what I'm sure you already know about water intake being so incredibly important before, during and after these games---dehydration may account for most of the symptoms you experienced.

Anyway, have fun and congratulations on taking the initiative! You're an inspiration!

Your evening of Cosom Hockey

Hi, I just read about your evening of sports. I don't think this is the way to go about starting doing exercise. It is a little too violent for someone who has not been physically active. If not done properly, sports could kill you. So, take it easy, one step at a time. This is your MOTHER speaking.
You know, even on crutches, I know what's good for you.
Please take care of yourself.
bye, love Mom

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce my mother, the Queen of the Worst Case Scenario.

Don't worry mum... I won't be taking on more than I can handle. During the game, I take plenty of breaks to get my breath back and drink lots of water. The game is 1.5 hours, but I left after 60 minutes. For the first half of the session (10 weeks), I probably be leaving early (when I've reached my limit).
