Our kitty Dinger has passed away. He was euthanized at the vet at 12:15pm today. He will be sorely missed.

We're not sure what happened exactly. We know that about 2 weeks ago, Dinger chewed the heads off of a couple of rubber snakes which caused a blockage in his system. He stopped eating and drinking and would throw-up anything we tried to get him to eat. We gave him an enema to try to loosen the blockage,  but it didn't seem to help.

He spent his last couple of days weak and collapsed in various parts of the house. We put him in the bathroom with food and litter and tried to keep him hydrated. We tried force-feeding him, but he couldn't keep any of it down.

When the vet examined him, he could feel no blockages, but he was fairly certain that his liver had shut down and his intestines were collapsing. His breathing was shallow and he was very weak, which the vet said that he was falling into a coma. We could have had some tests and IVs put in, but the vet said that his condition was so far advanced, it was probably too late.

He went quickly and without pain, although the tears were plentiful.

If you had not met Dinger, he was affectionate and playful, easy-going and sociable, enjoying any and all attention that was lavished upon him by his owners or his admirers. Although he and Newton were never close, they would often play together and share spots on the bed or couch, albeit a respectful distance from each other.

Dinger was also part goat, which probably led to his untimely demise. While Newton can be a bit of a fussy eater, Dinger was happy to finish anyone's leftovers with zeal, often suggesting that you should be finished with your meal before you actually were. Over the years, he's also attempted to find foreign objects to be tasty such as ear plugs, ribbon, and rubber snake heads. Not to speak ill of the dead, but ... Dumb Cat!

I've never had a pet put down before. I was shocked at how quickly he went (although he was pretty far gone with his condition) and I was dumbfounded at how different he looked with no life in his body. The house seems so empty now without his little "mrrrp mrrp" sounds, requesting affection, attention, or food (or all of the above).

Good night Dinger. You were a good furry friend and we'll miss you.

This brought tears to my eyes. I never knew your cat, but I empathize with your loss--- I've been there too many times.

My deepest condolences.

I'm so sorry to hear it. You all gave him a wonderful life.

Go well, Dinger. Chase mice and flies, and eat as much grass and bark and as many rocks as you like in the Summerland.

You told me on Thursday...*sigh* he was such a sweetheart and I too will miss him.

You and Sarah gave him a good home and lots of love and I know that you always went above and beyond the call of duty when his goat-ish tendencies made Dinger ill. Poor silly thing. He was a good cat.
